UNAUTHORISED COMMUNICATION AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT

Mrs Kapoor’s Question :  “  My RHO ,starts the bidding with 2Diamond,her partner  alerts, explains loudly--Its 6carder good diamond suit openning hand.RHO says no partner we decided to play Multi-2 Diamond. Now what should we the opponents do? “

Sridhar’s views : Partners are not permitted to talk to each other during the auction and the situation faced by you is an IRREGULARITY perpetrated deliberately by your opponents .  Whenever an Irregularity is committed the first thing you must do is to call the Director and bring it to his attention ; listen to his advice on what your options are and then only proceed with bidding or play. Everyone must appreciate that calling the director is not an act meant to insult any player , but merely establishing an irregularity .

The Director’s role in such situations is to restore equity by ensuring that the offended side is not affected by the irregularity ; once you have brought the irregularity to his attention you must stop worrying about any possible damage caused to you therein ; you merely proceed to bid and play normally assuming that the 2D opening meant what is stated in their Convention card . Please note that you may use the unauthorized  information provided to you by the irregularity at your own risk .

What is the Director likely to do ?

He may

(1) Impose a penalty on the offenders at end of the deal.

(2) Since 2 Diamond is a conventional call, the partner of 2 Diamond bidder may be barred from any further bidding.

(3) If later the non offenders become declarer, there will be lead penalties.

(4) The director will advise the offenders not to use the Unauthorized Information and play normally.

(5) He may even assign an adjusted score at the end of the deal if he deems it fit.
